"Units can be said to be a quantity of defined magnitude which can be used to measure the magnitude of several other quantities of the same kind or nature". For example, there are units like meters for length, kilograms for weight, and second for time. A physical quantity is made up of two parts, the first is the magnitude and the second is the unit. A physical quantity without a unit has no significance and can be said to be meaningless.

  • The following are the major system of units across the world:
  1. The first is the MKS system where the fundamental units of length, weight, and time are meter, kilogram, and second respectively.
  2. The second is the CGS system where the fundamental units of length, weight, and time are centimeter, gram, and second respectively.
  3. The third is the FPS system where the fundamental units of length, weight, and time are foot, pound, and second respectively.
  • There is the SI system of units which uses the MKS system as its base for units of length, weight, and time. In the SI system also the fundamental units of length, weight, and time are meter, kilogram, and second respectively. However, for quantities like Work, Power, and Force the SI units are Joule, Watt, and Newton respectively.

  • The SI units of length and mass are meter and kilogram respectively.
  • The symbol for meter is 'm' and for kilogram, it is 'kg'.
