Iodoform was used earlier as an antiseptic, but now it has been replaced by other formulations-containing iodine-due to its objectionable smell. The antiseptic property of iodoform is only due to the liberation of free iodine when it comes in contact with the skin.

USES OF CHLOROFORM

→ It is used as a solvent for resins , rubbers , oils and fats , alkaloids , iodide and many other substances.

→ The major use of chloroform today is in the production of the freon refrigerant, R - 22.

USES CARBON TETRACHLORIDE

→ It is used in the manufacture of refrigerants and propellants for aerosol cans.

→ It is also used as a feedstock in the synthesis of chlorofluorocarbons (freons) and other chemicals.

→ It is used as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

→ Until the mid 1960's , it was widely used a fire extinguisher under the name pyrene, as a cleaning fluid in industry and as a decreasing agent and a spot remover at home.
