Answer :-

Vacuoles are the structures inside the cells which mainly help in the storage and transport of necessary substances such as food, enzymes, ions, etc.

Functions :-

  • They play a great role in the facilitation of the transport of ions against the concentration gradient of the cell in which they are situated.

  • In some cases, they protect cells from harmful radiations ( Eg: Gas vacuoles protect Prokaryotic cells from UV-radiations).

Extra Information :-

  • Vacuoles are mostly absent in animal cells but, they occupy about 90 percent of the space in plant cells.

  • Vacuoles are single membrane structures.

  • The membranes of vacuoles are made up of "Tonoplast" and are semi-permeable in nature.
