Modern physics explains vacuum as a region of space occupied by no matter but oscillating energy density. This energy density is oscillating in a same way as agitated wayer body.
But still in our low grade texts there is explanation of vacuum as a space of nothing(its utter wrong)....but our universe was created as "something from nothing" manner nd it can only be explained by using new concept of vacuum.
