The Teeth help to prepare food for digestion by cutting and grinding it up. Each tooth is set into the jaw, which has a soft tissue covering Gum .
During their lives, humans have 2 sets of Teeth :-
A temporary set or a Deciduous dentition, made up of 20 Deciduous Teeth. also called milk or baby Teeth, and a later permanent dentition.
Types of Teeth :
◆ Incisors :
Sharp, chisel- shaped Teeth, used for biting and cutting. Each has one root, and there are four in each jaw, set at the front of the mouth.
◆ Canines or Cuspids :
Cone-shaped Teeth ( often called eye or dog Teeth ) ,used to tear food, Each has a sharp point (cusp) and one root. There are two in each jaw, one each side of the incisors . In many mammals , they are long and curved .
◆ premolars or Bicuspids :
blunt, broad Teeth, used for crushing and grinding ( found in the permanent set of Teeth only ) There are four in each jaw, two behind each canine. Each has two sharp ridges (cusps) and one root, except the upper first premolars, which have two.
◆ Molars :
Blunt, broad Teeth, similar to premolars but with a larger surface area. They are also used for crushing and grinding, and each has four surface points (cusps). lower Molars have two roots each, and upper ones have three. There are six Molars in each jaw, three behind each pair of premolars, and the third ones ( at the back ) are known as Wisdom teeth.
◆ Wisdom Teeth :
Four Molars ( the third ones in line ), lying at the end points of the jaws, they appear last of all, when a person is fully mature ( hence their name ). Often there is no room for them to come through and they get stuck in the jawbone, or impacted. A few people never develop Wisdom Teeth.
