What are vertebrate? What are their main features?

A vertebrate is an animal with a spinal cord surrounded by cartilage or bone. The word comes from vertebrae, the bones that make up the spine. Animals that are not vertebrates are called invertebrates. Vertebrates include birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.

Animals that have a backbone are called vertebrates

Main features

1) A backbone made of bone
2) A central nervous system partly enclosed within the backbone
3) Neural crest cell that form nerves and head and facial features
4) All brain functions are held within the skull
