Viviparous Animals:

→ Those living organisms that give birth to young ones are known as viviparous animals.

→ In viviparous animals, internal fertilization takes place. That is, the sperm fertilizes the egg inside the body of the female.

→ Usually the complete development of the embryo takes place inside the body of the female.

→ Such embryos receive direct nutrition from the mother.

Examples: Humans, Lions

Oviparous Animals:

→ Those animals that lay eggs that later on develop into young ones are known as oviparous animals.

→ Either internal or external fertilization takes place. In external fertilization the eggs are given out of the body by the female and the sperms are given out of the body by the male. They get fused and form an embryo in an external environment.

→ The complete development does not take place inside the female body.

→ Such embryos receive nutrition from the yolk present in the egg.

Examples: Hen, frogs

Knowledge Bytes:

→ Oviparous animals lay eggs that can be fertilized and unfertilized. The fertilized ones hatch to form chicks while the unfertilized ones are collected and sold in markets and shops.

→ As oviparous animals do not get direct nutrition from their mother, they are highly prone to premature deaths.
