The vulnerability of a region in case of earthquakes is determined by the inventory of material assets (buildings, infrastructure), ecological values, and social structures as well as of the susceptibility of these objects to earthquakes. Research focuses on the determination of the inventory with remote sensing methods, the development of susceptibility curves for buildings and other structures, analysis of the vulnerability of infrastructure facilities, and the analysis and development of quantitative methods to evaluate social vulnerability.
A number of damage simulation tools is being tested and developed. The knowledge obtained and experience gained are conveyed during disaster management courses. These courses are part of the “resource engineering” studies at KIT and also offered as e-learning courses for the Worldbank Institute (with application examples in India). We are closely cooperating with the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative (EMI) .
