Ocean Currents
The term "current" describes the motion of the ocean. An ocean current is any
more or less permanent or continuous, directed movement of ocean water that flows
in one of the Earth's oceans. The currents are generated from the forces acting
upon the water like the earth's rotation, the wind, the temperature and, salinity
differences and, the gravitation of the moon.
The ocean currents may be warm or cold. The warm ocean currents originate near
the equator and move towards the poles. The cold currents carry water from polar or
higher latitudes to tropical or lower latitudes.
Warm currents bring about warm temperatures over the land surface. The areas where
the warm and cold currents meet to provide the best fishing grounds in the world. Seas
around Japan and the eastern coast of North America are such examples. The areas
where a warm and cold current meets experience foggy weather making it difficult for navigation.
