WEAK FIELD LIGANDS :-

»»The ones at the beginning, such as I−, produce weak splitting (small Δ) and are thus weak field ligands. Theligands toward the end of the series, such as CN−, will produce strong splitting (large Δ) and thus are strongfield ligands. A picture of the spectrochemical series is provided below.

STRONG FIELD LIGANDS:-

»»The ones at the beginning, such as I−, produce weak splitting (small Δ) and are thus weak field ligands. Theligands toward the end of the series, such as CN−, will produce strongsplitting (large Δ) and thus are strong field ligands.

SPECTROCHEMICAL SERIES

»»A spectrochemical series is a list of ligands ordered on ligand strength and a list of metal ions based on oxidation number, group and its identity.
