Petrichor - the pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.
It sounds like it should be a word that has been used through the ages, and in fact it is actually a combination of two Ancient Greek words - petra, meaning stone, and ichor, which was the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology.
But… it was coined in 1964, for an article they were writing for the science journal Nature, by two scientists working for Australia’s Government funded science and research agency, the CSIRO (which stands for Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation).
