Reading, writing and comprehension cannot be improved exclusively. They are all interdependent on each other. Therefore, the following can be done to improve all three:

1. Structure the class well- Your lesson plan should begin with an introduction to the reading passage or chapter, followed by the actual reading and then end with an assignment. The introduction can include speaking skills and the assignment can focus on writing.

2. Develop interest in each stage- Since you are dealing with young learners who can get distracted very easily, it is very important to keep them involved apps each stage. The introduction to the text for instance should not be in the form of a lecture. It needs to be an interactive session which the children also find interesting.

3. Select material that is relevant to them- Children need to be able to connect with what they are reading and hence they should be able to relate to the material. Therefore, text selection is of immense importance here. A text that focuses on quantum physics will not be of any interest or use to third graders.

4. Get them to read aloud- When one reads aloud, one needs to focus on each word. It gradually builds reading and comprehension skills.

5. Read the same text time and again- Children who are not very comfortable reading, will find it easier to read text that they are familiar with. This builds their confidence and they begin to take interest in reading.

6. Include fun activities- Having fun is an important part of language learning. The activities do not always have to be verbal. Children can even be encouraged to share a drawing of their favourite character. Such activities are crucial in motivating the non-readers. You can also develop word games based on the words and meanings present in the text.

These are a few steps that you can take to help develop foundation literacy in young learners.
