the splitting of atoms or molecules in presence of external electric field is called stark effect. the splitting of atoms or molecules in presence of magnetic field is called zeeman effect

As we know, electrons are revolving around the nucleus of atom in a permitted orbit. They contain large number of single spectra lines. These spectra lines when subjected to magnetic field as well as electric field, further splits into multiple lines or several lines, are called zeeman effect or strak effect.
