Explanation:

(1) Combustion Reaction:-

when carbon compounds heated/burn in presence of oxygen to give out carbon dioxide with heat and energy.

Eg-:CH4+O2--- CO2+2H2+energy

(2)Oxidation Reaction:- it is a reaction in which carbon compounds get oxidized with the help of oxidizing agents.

Eg-: CH3CH2OH-----CH2COOH

(3) Addition or Hydrogenation Reaction-: in this type of reaction an unsaturated carbon compounds are converted into saturated carbon compounds by addition of hydrogen with the help of nickel.

Eg-:CH2=CH2+H2-----CH3-CH3

(4) Substitution Reaction-: in this type of reaction chlorine is added to the hydrocarbons in presence of sunlight as a result of which chlorine replace hydrogen atoms on by one

Eg-: CH4+2Cl2 ----C5L4+2H2

The following are the chemical properties of carbon compounds :-

  • Combustion :- It is a reaction in which the carbon compound burns in oxygen to give carbon dioxide along with heat and light.

Here, the saturated hydrocarbons gives a clean flame whereas unsaturated one's give yellow flame with lots of black smoke.

For example :-

  1. C + O2 ➡ CO2 + heat and light
  2. CH4 + O2 ➡ CO2 + H2O + heat and light
  3. CH3CH2OH + O2 ➡ CO2 + H2O + heat and light

  • Oxidation reaction :- It is a reaction in which good oxidizing agents like alkaline kMnO4 that is potassium permanganate aur acidified K2Cr2O7 that is Potassium dichromate are used which helps to and oxygen in the starting material.

For example :-

CH3CH2OH ➡(acidified KMnO4 + heat) CH3COOH

  • Addition Reactions :- It is the reaction involving the addition of two reactants to form a single product. In this is a reaction H2 is added to unsaturated carbon compound in presence of a catalyst like Palladium or Nickel to give a saturated carbon compound. This is also called hydrogenation.

Example :- CH2CH2 + H2 ➡(Ni) CH3CH3

  • Substitution reaction :- It is reaction with direct displacement of an atom of group of atoms by another atom of group of atoms takes place. It happens in the presence of Sunlight where chlorine is added for fast reaction. Chlorine replaces hydrogen atoms one by one.

Example :- CH4 + Cl2 ➡ CH3Cl + HCl (in presence of Sunlight)

After the "➡" sign in the reactions above if there is something written in "( )",then it should be written above the "➡" in reality.
