What aspect of humanity was presented through Maggie's fate?

That the people ,even if emoatgetic, turn their faces back when someone is in need. here the villagers adopted John and Kate simply because they were physically able and of some help to them but Maggie who was a crippled and a bed ridden child who could not be of any help to anybody but was in extreme need of help, was left back in the hovel simply because of her disability to work. the villagers felts empathetic for her but turned their faces because no one wanted to Bear the burden of a bed ridden kid. This shows that the society would help u if only u can be of any help to them in future, if not, then they won't give a second look or thought.
