What aspect of hydrogen makes it metal and non metal?

Hydrogen is lightest element on periodic table. Hydrogen is colourless, Odourless gas. Hydrogen is a non metal but shares a group with metals because of its attribute to form cation. Hydrogen is not considered a metal, even though it does exist in Group I (alkali metals) of the periodic table.

Hydrogen is a nonmetal and is placed above group in the periodic table because it has ns1 electron configuration like the alkali metals. However, it varies greatly from the alkali metals as it forms cations (H+) more reluctantly than the other alkali metals
