After the discovery of India the european trading companies knew that there are more useful resource's and they found many cheap labourers were ready to work or join industries for their livelihood . they found this as an advantage that India had cheap labour ,less market value , small companies ready to sell their companies and thus they began investing which is called the foreign investment in India. No i do not think that their motive must have been only trading they could have thought to impose their will upon the undeveloped country then for their advantage.they later controlled most of the parts of India by collecting more tax.
