Answer:

Alright so let me list a few preconceptions that I had about India and Indians

A Cricket crazy country where our tormentor (Sachin Tendulkar) is/was treated like a god

Dirty, unhygienic and poverty ridden (thanks to slumdog millionaire)

Not a safe place to travel especially for women

Not many tourist places; Taj Mahal being an exception

Pakistan making it unsafe from the Terrorist point of view

Are there places besides Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore??; in short largely unaware of cities and towns in India

People are generally asocial, rude and always ready to pick up a fight

There are no territory disputes between India and others

A land of temples and religious folks

I then decided to travel to India; Not very keen or excited and knew that I would regret spending money on such a trip to such a place with such people.

Places I visited - Mumbai, Rajasthan, Taj Mahal, Srinagar

What I think about India and Indians now

Mumbai is a massive city with massive population; has a tremendous symphony between rich and poor. Everyone is always running at anytime in a day.

Anyone travelling to Rajasthan should spend at least a month there. The place is so rich in culture and tradition. The food and the monuments are breathtaking

Taj Mahal deserves all the praises it gets. Agra otherwise is a bit of a mess and the Indian government should do something about the city that leads to the country’s biggest attraction

Srinagar made me sad personally; probably one of the most beautiful places that I have been to but after interacting with the locals I realized how difficult life is there due to the Kashmir issue. This is when I came to know about the territory dispute with Pakistan and felt sad at how such a beautiful place can go bad. Hope sense prevails.

Indians in general were amazing; helpful, talkative, curious, they would keep staring as if they were seeing an alien

Food was spicy but yummy; the vada pav and the chai is something that i still miss

Yes the place is slightly on the dirtier and the unhygienic side and I heard it is much better than before thanks to the current government

It is a land of temples. But surprisingly it is a land of other religious houses as well. There were innumerable mosques and churches

Cricket is a religion and Sachin is still a god :)

On the whole, I am surprised how low I used to think of India before actually going there. Certainly a place to visit. But make sure you have enough time. India is an acquired taste, you might hate at first but with time you will like it. Will surely visit India again. Do suggest other places to visit.
