Potassium comes under alkali metals and have one electron in its valence shell, thus have tendency to lose one electron and gain stability by forming compound in air (oxides generally).

It also reacts with water vigorously to form hydroxide by forming visual effects.

It also readily attacks halogens to form alkylhalides.
