Answer:
Yes, and a very thoughtful and well intended one.
More so if the giver knows of financial struggles by the recipient. It wouldn’t make any sense to send someone a basket of gourmet food and champagne when that person is having serious issues paying their rent, not current on their important bills, or even not having the basic food or diapers for their kids.
Some people would rather give a gift that is meaningful and serves a purpose. Personally, I’m tired of all the cheap junk which is lacking in taste that people give around the holidays (mugs, Christmas tree ornaments, or your proudly-home-made-family tradition wonky biscuits (which I will toss away as soon as you leave for hygiene and safety reasons)!
Each time I throw something away I feel bad for the resources that went into it and the environment. That stuff isn’t worth giving to someone else (I wouldn’t gift someone an item that I personally think is cheap). They are not even beautiful or carrying any value, just generic stuff from the dollar store. I would rather people make a small donation and then give me a nice holidays card from that charity, instead of ugly useless trash.
I am not poor, but I would have much appreciated a useful item or nothing but a nice card. If you must make a gesture out of the holiday spirit, how about inviting me to your home for a cosy evening since I am single and have no one to be with?
Bottom line, yes, paying a bill or two is great. Do it if you are in a position to (but with someone close like a relative or a friend). You can also do it for a coworker or a complete stranger, but in this case I suggest that you make it anonymous (the objective is to help the person not receive praise, right?).
If you are the recipient, accept it graciously, unless you really do not need it and think that someone else is more deserving. Pay it forward when you can.
happy holidays!
