Answer:

A STUDY OF ELOCUTION AS A METHOD OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

This is Why?

What exactly is Elocution as understood in Sri Lanka? What do Elocution teachers actually teach? Why is it so popular among some while receiving heavy criticism from others? How does it compare with other teaching methodologies used in the field of English Language Teaching? This study was originally conducted as part of an MA in Linguistics, and through its publication the author aims to provide a comprehensive definition of Elocution as a method of teaching English, and to study the teaching techniques and beliefs of those who function in the profession. Findings are based on questionnaires that were administered to teachers and students, and interviews with experts from Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. As there is no literature available on the teaching of Elocution at present, this publication is written for a large audience of parents and teachers, academics and laymen who have an interest in the subject. The findings of this study were presented at the Research Symposium 2014 organised by the English Language Teaching Unit of the University of Colombo.
