It was planned move.The intruder has done a murder and he didn't wanted to hang.So he had came to Gerrard home to take his place in the society.

The Intruder was a criminal. He had murdered and didn’t want to get trapped in police. So, he planned to escape wisely. It was a planned move by the intruder.
At that time, he met Gerrard. He was a cultural playwright and lived in a small cottage. He looked similar to the intruder. So, he wanted to use his identity and he learnt all the oratorical skills of Gerrard and came to know his neighbours and friends.
His plan was to kill Gerrard and to live in the name of his identity in that village. Thus, the intruder made a planned move.
