It was planned move. The Intruder was a criminal. He had murder and he did not wanted to hang. Intruder was being wanted by the police so he hatched the very smart idea of impersonating him as a gentleman who was not under the police scanner. Gerrard was a cultural playwright. He lived in small cottage. Gerrard looks similar to Intruder so hr choose Gerrard.
The Intruder was keeping a watch on Gerrard from last three months. He learned his oratorical skills the way he walked, he knew about his neighbours and friends. The Intruder 's plan was to kill Gerrard and take over his identity. He suprise is his plan to kill Gerrard and take on hid identity to lead a secure and hassle free life. Whereas Gerrard' s suprise id his fictious identity, jid way of refraining the intruder from killing him. This shows that it was a planned move. Thnx
