The moral of this story, "A house is not a home", is that one must face the challenges of life head-on. That people encounter many challenges in life but they must stand firm and fight them through.

This is shown in the theme of this story very well. The author loses his house to fire, he loses his cat, he loses his precious belongings. He has to change his school and he feels depressed. However, the mean students of his old school come about and offer help. He also ends up finding his cat, too.
