a) The Postmaster speak these words when Ali was died. He was enquiring about Ali, who used to visit the Post Office daily and wait for a letter from his daughter Mariam. Ali has now been dead and this was not known by the Postmaster, thus when Laxmi Das informs him about it, he is shocked.

b) The topic of their conversation was Ali, who is now dead.

c) The feeling that these words convey is of amazement and surprise, ie, the postmaster is shocked, and it also convey the feeling of love between a father and a daughter.
