What can Buddhist eat meat when they are not allowed to eat onions and garlic?

The Buddha did not teach that onions and other pungent roots should not be eaten.

This maybe a later addition by some buddhists.

Originally Jain’s follow this teaching for 2 reasons. 1) It is considered to harm the living beings under the soil when these are uprooted. 2) It is considered a royal food (Rajasic) as it inflames passions and lust in one who eats it.

This was something Mahavira or Niganta Nathaputta who was a contemporary of Buddha taught and Buddha has criticized his philosophy and doctrine. Thus it is patently wrong to say it is Buddha’s teaching.

I am from Theravada Tradition and this is unheard of. As there is no restriction of any kind on food. It is more important what comes out of the mouth (Speech) then what goes in it (Food).
