Urdu word for tiger is shair (شیر). It’s a male noun. A tiger is considered male in Urdu by default unless its actual gender is known.

However, the same word is also used for lion and some other big cats. Which can be very confusing. Therefore, for the sake of clarification a tiger is also called dhaaridaar shair (دھاری دار شیر) which literally means stripped tiger or stripped lion.

Moreover, a lion is called bubbur shair (ببر شیر) in Urdu to distinguish it from a tiger.....
