Answer:
Kaushik was a young Brahmin in the ancient times. He was an young intelligent man who wanted to pursue vedas, study them and become master of it. Kaushik went off to a hermitage , became a hermit and studied vedas. In due course of 14 years he mastered vedas .His daily schedule consisted of a daily visit to the nearby village in the afternoon where he will ask for food offering to the villagers
One day, when he was deep in his meditation, A crow sitting atop the tree put its dropping on him. Even though kaushik was a rishi now, but still a human. He could not control his displeasure over this incident and gave a very angry look to the crow, immediate thought in kaushik’s mind was this crow should be punished with death for such a misdeed. And alas his wish came true!!! And the crow suddenly failed off the tree lifeless. Suddenly kaushik was filled with remorse, He felt bad for the bird and immediately felt how frightful it will be if all the wishes fulfilled themselves, if each angry wish took effect at once.
He stood in front of the house and asked for the offering. The lady of the house came out, acknowledged the presence of saintly rishi on sunny afternoon day and went back to the kitchen to bring the alms. During the same time, her husband came to the house, Immediately the lady went to see him and gave him cold water and served him food. After this when she came out the Kaushik rishi’s anger saw no bounds. He was mad with krodha. Seeing him the lady said “ Swami, I am not crow to get burned with your eyes, Pati seva dharma is the real dharma for me, all other dharma’s come after that”
Kaushik was shocked to the core after hearing this from the lady, he could not understand how this lady knows about his story of the morning ?He was not able to have this much power even after 14 years of veda study and this lady was able to tell his past even without studying the vedas. The lady guessed his confusion and told him “ Hey rishi, Please go and meet Dharmavyadha in city of Mathura, He will answer all your questions”
He went to the city of Mathura. He was expecting the hermitage of some great Brahmin. But when he finally reached the destination ,he was standing in front of the butcher shop. Immediately after seeing him the butcher called him and said “ Sir, Please come inside the lady must have sent you for me”. Even then kaushik was more surprised. He was thinking, he also knows what has happened with me in the past. He got me here. And then he asked Dharmvyadha the secret of his knowledge. Dharmvyadha told him, he was merely doing his duty of carrying on the family trade. He said that a farmer who tills the land also tramples insects unknowingly. Man reaches perfection by honest pursuits of whatever calling falls into his life. The occupation may be one he is born to in society or it may have been forced onhim by circumstances or be may have taken it up by choice. But what really matters is the spirit of sincerity and faithfulness with which he does his life’s work
The moral of this striking story of Dharmavyadha so skillfully woven by Vedavyasa into the Mahabharata, is the same as the teaching of the Gita. Man reaches perfection by the honest pursuit of whatever calling falls to his lot in life, and that this is really worship of God who created and pervades all. (Bhagavad Gita,XVIII, 45-46)
