What caused Buddhism to lose favor with the Chinese government?

Buddhism was criticized for being a foreign religion. Like Christian monasteries in Europe, Buddhist monasteries had acquired thousands of acres of land and serfs. The vast amounts of land also came with corruption. Buddhism also taught that the material world was not important, it was an illusion, this went against Confucianism, which taught for devotion to family and hard work.
