The start of the famine has been attributed to a failed monsoon in 1769 that caused widespread drought and two consecutive failed rice crops.

The main cause of the famine in Bengal in 1770 was the poor system of administration under the dila government. By this system, the British were incharge of collecting revenue and the Nawab in charge of the law & order . Since mother the British nir the Nawab had complete responsibility of the region , they were not interested in the people welfare . Since the British were only concerned with collecting of money , they didn't do any thing for the people of province . This resulted in a series of famines in Bengal 1770 with million died .
