What are tsunamis ?

- Tsunamis are giant waves caused due to coastal earthquake ,volcanic eruption or landslide. They cause enormous destruction.

Indian Ocean Tsunamis 2004:

A huge earthquake came under the Indian ocean on 26, December ,2004. While most earthquakes last for only a few seconds ,this one lasted almost for 10 minutes. It raised a part of oceanic crust by several metres. This caused Tsunamis that killed more than 257,000 people. The regions worst affected were coasts of Indonesia ,South India ,Thailand and Sri Lanka. Some of these regions had tsunamis with waves more than 30 metres long. Tsunamis are very rare in the Indian Ocean. So, there was no tsunami detection system ,like the one for the pacific ocean. The people couldn't recognise natural signs such as frothing bubbles on the water edges and receding waves. More than 16,000 people were killed in India .The worst effected region in India was Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Some of the Islands of the region completely vanished. The tsunamis in the Indian oceans of 2004 are considered as one of the most dangerous natural disaster in the world.
