It is the force that opposes relative motion or tendency of relative motion between two surfaces in contact represented by f. Because of this friction force is called a self adjusting force. Earlier, it was believed that friction was caused due to the roughness of the two surfaces in contact with each other.

Answer:

Friction is a force that resists the relative motion between two objects or materials. The causes of this resistive force are molecular adhesion, surface roughness, and deformations. Adhesion is the molecular force resulting when two materials are brought into close contact with each other.
