When the air rushing in hits your voice box, your vocal cords close suddenly and you're left with a big hiccup. Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes.

Hiccups are caused by an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm. There is no real cause for them but we can get hiccups from eating too quickly or too much, drinking gas filled drinks such as alcohol or fizzy drinks, stress or strong emotional feelings such as feeling nervous or excited. They happen when the diaphragm spasms causing the lungs to take in air quickly causing the ‘hic’ sound in your throat.
