What causes solid water to be less dense than liquid water

because water is the only liquid that expand on cooling and when something expand it molecules move far apart so it becomes less dense

because solid things like ice, wood etc. are very hard and they have difference in density than liquid. and liquid is indefinite shape and definite volume. and compresible. when the solid water to be less dense than liquid.
