Carbon is a non metal with Atomic number 6

The two characteristics property of carbon element which lead to the formation of a very large number of organic compounds are :

---> Catenation [self linking ]
---> Tetra valency.

Catenation :
Carbon atoms can link with one another by means of strong covalent bonds to form long chains of carbon atoms.
Carbon an combine in straight chain or branched chain and closed /ring type chains.

Tetravalent :
Due to its valency 4, a carbon can form covalent bonds with a number of carbon atoms as well as with a large number of other atoms such as Hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen etc.

HEY!!

⏩Carbon has some really unique properties which help to form such a large number of compounds.

⚫Catenation

⏺️It is the ability of carbon compounds to form long chains, branched chains or rings.

⚫Smaller nucleus helps it to attract more number of electrons.

⚫Tetravalency

⏺️It has got 4 valence electrons ( actually even silicon, lead and all of group 18 elements are tetra valent but carbon is the one with the above properties as well, which give it an edge over the other elements).
