i think because of catenation ...i. e large combining capacity of carbon atoms with other atoms... hope it helps you

Due to its catenation power. catenation is the bonding of atoms of the same element into a series. Carbon is a versatile element which is found almost every where. Carbon forms bond with many elements but mainly with hydrogen named as hydrocarbon. Carbon have 4 valency which leads to continue it to make a chain of many bonds. Carbon is found to be bonding with many elements such as nitrogen ,chlorine, bromine, iodine, etc.

Bonding with elements leads to formation of covalent bonds and which results into formation of a big molecule. Hence,......
