The pressure required for formation of diamonds from graphite, is about 725,000 pounds per square inch. Under ideal conditions for formation of diamonds, this kind of pressure is found only in the earth’s mantle about 100 miles deep.
Heat of 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit, followed by immediate cooling, with the above pressure results in formation of diamonds.
According to geologists, this entire process is estimated to take between 1 – 3.3 billion years.
