When a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, endosmosis occurs because in the solution water concentration is more than in the cell so inward diffusion of water takes place. Easiest way to remember is that hypo means less and tonic means solute concentration so in hypotonic solute concentration is less so ultimately solvent i.e., water concentration is more and water flows from higher to lower concentration so it moves from outside to cell.
Thanks.
