On applying pressure on a brittle substance, it will break or fail within a small amount of application of force.
1) Brittle materials are the ones which shows very little elastic deformation before failure.
2) Unlike brittle materials which, on application of a load upto elastic limit returns back to its original state, brittle materials do not show wide range of deformation before failure.
3) Examples of brittle materials are: glasses and ceramics.
