The word printing was not known until September 1556. In early 1556, Jesuit Brother Juan de Bustaman (1536-1588), who knew the art of printing, entered Goa. The art of printing first entered India through the Jesuits.
After the first printing was established in Goa in 1556, the first printing press was brought to Mumbai (later Bombay) in 1670. After 1714 in Tamil Nadu, 1800 in Kerala and the following years. Several printing presses were established in many parts of India. Initially, all of those presses were established by Christian missionaries in their attempt to print different languages in the Bible. Apart from the Bible, Bombay and Pune-based presses printed local content in local languages. From 1925-28, two printing presses were established in Nashik district of Maharashtra.
