Prior to the coming of the British, caste had grown into a powerful social institution, with the dominance of Brahmins at the top of its hierarchy. The Hindu kings also upheld this institution with the help of their civil power. The British brought with them their own traditional form of government which was quite different from that of the Indian monarchical system. As prudent foreigners they were more interested in consolidating their power over a strange land and people rather than initiating reformative changes in its peculiar institutions such as “caste”.
