1. The fall of the Jacobian government allowed the wealthier middle classes to seize power.
2. A new constitution was introduced which denied the vote to non propertied sections of society.
3. It provided for two elected legislative councils. Then these appointed a Directory, an executive made up of five members.
4. This was meant as a safeguard against the concentration of power in a one man executive as under the Jacobins.
5. However the directors often clashed with the legislative councils, who then sought to dismiss them.
6. when the jacobians government came to an end , a directory was formed so as to avoid the concentration of powers in the hands of one person .
7. the members of the directory fought among themselves which led to a political instability.
