While ruling over India, the British changed the educational system in India completely. Perhaps the single biggest factor was the starting of western education style in which the instructional language was English.

The conventional Indian educational system till that time in which pupils learnt different subjects in gurukuls and places of worship gave way to a process of schools and universities.

It was based on the system that was prevalent in the Western world. The British rule in India brought many positives as well as negatives to the educational sphere.

While the British promoted western thoughts and ideals, they did not think highly regarding Indian philosophy and culture. Indian history was only looked at from the eurocentric point of view.

At the same time, the English education also helped students to learn different global subjects and helped them to march shoulder-to-shoulder with the rest of the world as it offered more opportunities for a lot of people.
