As the plant grows older, the outer protective tissue undergo certain changes. A strip of secondary meristem replaces the epidermis of the stem.

As the plants grow older the epidermis play major role. The three functions of epidermis are:

1. It helps in protecting the body from the environment especially from the harmful rays of Sun.

2. It helps in preventing excessive water loss from the plant body.

3. It helps in protecting the plant body from infection.
