It was a major turning point in the Renaissance, which occurred from 1350-1550. Renaissance means rebirth; It began in Italy, and it was the rebirth of ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Johannes Gutenberg was a German goldsmith and printer. He was the first to develop movable type(printing press) in 1450. This allowed for the mass production of books. His invention revolutionized book-making in Europe. Gutenberg was the key figure in spreading the Renaissance. His invention of the moveable type is still considered the most important invention in history. Before the printing press, monks copied letters and books, and it took months and years for some materials to be published. This meant not many books were available to the public, therefore knowledge was limited to those who could afford for a book to be hand copied. It also meant everyone was going to the Catholic Church for answers. However, after everyone could read their own Bible, they realized the Catholic Church was wrong about pretty much everything, and they turned to science. Now, common people could buy books, and educate themselves, rather than rich people only having education. Without the printing press, we wouldn't be where we are today. The printing press changed the world forever.
