The liberals were the architects of the Revolution of 1848. They supported the ideas of la patrie (the fatherland) and le citoyen (the citizen). It emphasised the notion of a united community enjoying equal rights under a constitution. Politically, it emphasised the concept of government by consent. Since the French Revolution, liberalism had stood for the end of autocracy and clerical privileges, a constitution and representative government through parliament. In social sphere,the liberals also stressed the inviolability of private property. In the economic sphere, liberalism stood for the freedom of markets and the abolition of state-imposed restrictions on the movement of goods and capital.
