It started in Mughal times, when the singing was done at Akbar's court, the combination of these instruments was used. The music which was popular at that was known as Hindustani classical music.

music (with the related dance forms worshipped even in tradition) based on the
seven notes [Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni evenly matching to Do Re Me La So Fa Tee] in
