It started in Mughal times, when the singing was done at Akbar's court, the combination of these instruments was used. The music which was popular at that was known as Hindustani classical music.
It was mainly interfaced with the Arab, Iranian, and central Asian traditions and it was mainly a fusion.

The Indian structure of vocal music is old & precedes any Arab, Iranian & central Asian civilisations. It was court music (with the related dance forms worshipped even in tradition) based on the seven notes [Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni evenly matching to Do Re Me La So Fa Tee] in which it is embedded even now. I trust Turkish music has 12 notes in place of 7 of ours in an octave,
Islamic traditional practices without amending it, adjusted Indian music important to a kind of Fusion.
