When raisin and RBC are placed inside a hypotonic solution, water enters them by the process of endosmosis. This leads to the swelling up and finally bursting of cell.

  • It is because hypotonic solution refers to a solution having a lower concentration of solute( and so a higher amount of water) and so the solute concentration inside the RBC or raisin is greater than the solution( and water content is less).
  • In such a case, water gets transported from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. As a result of this, water enters into the cells to maintain osmolarity. This leads to a swelled up structure.
  • The RBC does not have any cell wall to maintain rigidity so continuous entry of water leads to hemolysis of RBC( rupture or destruction of cells).
