Answer:

Start school later in the day. Multiple studies have shown that teens need a good amount of high quality sleep, but students usually don’t get the amount needed. Ideally teens would start school at 11am but we all know that isn’t possible. A 9am start time however, is doable and leaves plenty of times for after school activities.

Decrease summer vacation. Instead of the normal 2 month break start school up in August, give in a week off in early October, and a week off in early May. It will still give students a break, but will save two weeks of lost class time overall. Not even counting that students will retain more information in a month off than 2 months off.

Bring back recess. Schools are frequently combining lunch and recess, limiting the amount of time students get to be active. Make recess a required class that lets students organize sports to play and exercises to try every day.

Let students take classes that match their skill level. Advanced in Science? We can move you up a level. Doing poorly in Language? We bring you back a few levels and work hard to build from there.

Have better lunches. Limit the sugar, fat, sodium and calories allowed in a lunch. Eliminate soft drinks and vending machines with unhealthy foods. Try setting up a day a week where everyone (including teachers) has to sit in randomly selected seats. I believe it will help students learn to talk to their peers more and learn more about their teachers.

Use more online learning. Allow students to take a mixture of class and online learning. Students will read the facts online so class time can be spent on getting help from a teacher and working on projects.

Stop having autocratic schools. While preparing students for a democracy schools are very autocratic, giving adults all the decision-making power. Let students give constructive feedback to teachers and administrators. Use student suggestions. Give students a spot on the school board. Get help from students to form a curriculum. Hold meetings between students and school officials.

Bring more technology into the classroom. You see some schools trying this, but they only take it to some extent. I want schools to be based around technology. When students need to ask questions they should be able to send a notification to the teacher so they know to turn around to see your hand. Students should send in virtual answers to the teacher’s questions. Students should send in ”this is easy” ”this is hard” polls so the teacher knows when to speed up or slow down the lesson.

These changes would make all the difference in making schools better for students and teachers.
