I always find Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub to have been one of the greatest strategists in history, a man who not only excelled on the battlefield but also in the arena of politics. After all, Saladin did win not only the Battle of Hattin, which set up the perfect situation for him to destroy the Crusader Kingdoms, but he also was able to win in the long run against Richard I, even after the failure of the siege of Acre and the defeat at Arsuf. Saladin had kept his army intact during both events, thus still posing a great threat to the Third Crusade which deterred it from successfully reconquering Jerusalem, the greatest political symbol of the time.
